Spearfish Man Defies Odds, Survives Bout With Pancreatic Cancer

Hoffman grew up in Onida, S.D., about as far from an ocean as one could get. But, even before graduating from Sully Buttes High School in 1975, he had enlisted in the Navy. Following basic training, Hoffman was assigned to “one of the smallest ships in the Navy,” and spent the next three years towing ships and barges up the Pacific coast, and sailing to exotic destinations that included Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and the Philippines.
